A UNIVERSITY of Zambia student, Margret Chibesakunda, 22, has died after being fatally electrocuted while attempting to charge her phone in her dorm room.

According to Zambia Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga, the incident occurred last night causing an uproar from students who took to the streets, demonstrating.

The university clinic nurse reported the incident to Chelston Police Station around 23:00 hours.

“The incident occurred around 21:30 hours at October Block 2, Room 23, of the University of Zambia Great East Road Campus. Ms. Chibesakunda sustained severe burns on her neck, right elbow, and leg.”

“Despite efforts to save her, she succumbed to her injuries.” Hamoonga said.

Following the unfortunate event, there was a spontaneous demonstration by University of Zambia students, obstructing the Great East Road with stones and drums.

“In response, police officers swiftly intervened to restore public order. The students were urged to mourn within the campus premises rather than disrupting public order. Fortunately, the students complied with the advice and returned to the University grounds,” added Hamoonga.

Chibesakunda’s body was transferred to the University Teaching Hospital Mortuary.

The cause of the electrocution is under investigation.
