ZAMBIA Revenue Authority (ZRA) has exposed a transit fraud scheme centered around a truck carrying a 40-foot container loaded with safety matches.

The container, housed approximately 2923 cartons of matchboxes, carrying an estimated tax liability of K600,000, based on taxes declared in Tanzania amounting to US$30,000.

Acting on a tip-off, ZRA officers intercepted the empty truck on the Great North Road after the matchstick cartons were offloaded in Kabwe.

The matchstick boxes, destined for Zimbabwe from Nakonde, were actually intended for Kabwe, as evidenced by a local business’s premises.

The driver of the truck assisted ZRA officers in locating the offloaded safety match boxes.Inspection confirmed that the boxes were specifically manufactured for the Zambian market, on behalf of a Kabwe-based company.

Additionally, ZRA officers discovered a broken seal from the Zambia Revenue Authority at the importer’s location in Kabwe, where the supposed transit consignment had been offloaded.

ZRA corporate communications manager Oliver Nzala said in a statement that the Authority seized the truck with the registration numbers AJE 6994 (tractor) and ALC 9051T (trailer).
