POLICE have arrested three top government officials in Luapula Province who have been linked to theft of sugilite.

Those arrested are Luapula Province deputy permanent secretary Roy Mwansa, Nchelenge district commissioner Musonda Mutepuka and Mwansabombwe district commissioner Molton Sikazwe – all presidential appointees.

Apart from manganese, Luapula Province is host to many precious minerals, including one called sugilite.

A kilogramme of sugilite sells for as high as K3, 500.

Chembe district of Luapula Province is rich in sugilite.
Â
Since the central government has not put in place an organised system of extracting the stones from the ground, some sticky-fingered government officials in Luapula Province thought they could turn themselves into another form of Jerabos.

But the police have moved in do what was unimaginable under the fallen PF regime; arresting serving government officials.

According to a statement issued by Zambia Police deputy spokesperson Danny Mwale, the trio were plucked out from their swivel chairs to warming the cold floors of the police cells, with their behinds, around 18:00 hours yesterday.

It is reported that the trio was working with eight other people who were arrested and charged in Central Province for transporting, in a Sino tipper truck, sugilite mineral ore, suspected to have been stolen.

Mwale stated that police in Central Province impounded the vehicle and charged the eight with the offence of conveying property reasonably suspected to be stolen and carrying out mining operations without a licence.

Mwale stated that the three government officials are currently in police detention.

Sources have told Kalemba that more government officials are earmarked for arrests, in connection with the same offence.
