ZAMBIA Correctional Service (ZCS) commissioner general Fredrick Chilukutu has disclosed that the Service is closing in on 100, 000 hectares of land for cattle ranching in the Nothern hemisphere.
The commissioner general said the ZCS has identified and surveyed land in Luapula, Muchinga and Northern Provinces meant to house 10,000 to 12, 000 cattle in the next three years.
Mr Chilukutu disclosed that the ZCS is ahead of time and that so far has procured 50 bulls and hopes that by the end of this year, the Service would have at least 1, 500 heifers.
“We are re-stocking cattle and our target is 1, 500 heifers by the end of 2023 to be ranched at Chishinga (Kawambwa), Kalungwishi (Lunte), Chimpompo (Kasama) and Mbesuma (Chinsali),” Mr Chilukutu said.
“Already, we have procured 50 bulls currently quarantined at Kalonga farm in Kabwe. In three years time, our goal is to have between 10, 000 to 12, 000 cattle in our ranches.”
The commissioner general further disclosed that the ZCS is in talks to share the ranch spaces with the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, who are responsible for the breeding, researching, and training locals in cattle ranching.
Mr Chilukutu said the ZCS is equipped with five veterinary doctors, in addition to agronomists, livestock officers, veterinary assistants and that it is yet to employ professional cattle headers.
“We are equipped with skilled and professional human resource to man this project. We shall not use inmates as headers but we shall employ professionals,” Mr Chilukutu said.
“The professional headers will actually be a mode of skills transfer to our inmates and local community.”
Mr Chilukutu revealed this today following the conclusion of the scoping exercise that was conducted by experts within the ZCS, led by Dr Emmanuel Sikazwe.
The four sites – Chishinga 42, 000 hectares, Kalungwishi 46 ,000 hectares, Chimpompo 180 hectares and 10, 000 hectares at Mbesuma have low disease burden, vast grazing land and numerous water bodies, originating from the ranches.
The ranches, prior to the ZCS’ interest, are behind managed and ran by the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock.
They are equipped with basic and modern ranching infrastructure and equipment to service 10 to 30, 000 cattle.
Once the acquisition is made, the ranches stand straight in the ZCS’s mandate of increased agricultural production, creation of open air farms for skills transfer and de-congestion as well as a viable vehicle for rural development.
