A consortium of civil society organisations (CSOs) have noted that there has been a further reduction of the participation of women, youths and different-abled in the electoral process.
Speaking on behalf of the CSOs in Lusaka today, Christian Churches Monitoring Group (CCGM) steering committee chaiperson Bishop Andrew Mwenda disclosed that women, differently-abled and youths continue to face difficulties to participate in politics.
Bishop Mwenda said different stakeholders like the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) and political parties should make the political environment favourable for women to participate.
Bishop Mwenda said there has been a continued culture of obstruction of divergent political views.
He said such obstruction is instigated by the rulling party supporters and sympathisers, including the use of law enforcement to stifle freedoms.
Bishop Mwenda also called for a safer working environment for journalists during elections, stating that police should be more vigilant and protect citizens, despite their political inclinations, as long as they are exercising their rights within the framework of the law.
He added that CSOs also noted an inertia and lack of a roadmap, regarding the reform of the electoral process Act (EPA) and the Constitution.
Bishop Mwenda has since called on Minister of Justice Mulambo Haimbe to immediately release a Constitution-making roadmap.
“We are taken aback by the lack of commitment on the part of government to release a comprehensive roadmap on the Constitution and EPA reform process,” Bishop Mwenda said.
Meanwhile, Bishop Mwenda said the government ought to expedite the finalisation of the access to information bill, as it is critical to make state and non state actors accountable.
The CSOs concerned CSOs are Action Aid Zambia, Alliance for Community Action, Bloggers of Zambia, FODEP, GEARS and Chapter One Foundation.
