A SOLDIER in the Zambia Army has died from injuries he sustained during festivities to welcome the new year.
According to a statement issued by Zambia Army spokesperson Colonel Martin Kalaluka Liyungu and posted on the Zambia Army Facebook page,
Staff Sergeant Mulima Kelvin Silukena died in the early hours of Sunday at Maina Soko Medical Centre in Lusaka.
“SSgt Mulima, sustained injuries from the back blast of a star shell during the count-down to the New Year at Army Headquarters,” explained Colonel Liyungu.
A Star Shell is an explosive projectile used by soldiers in battle to explode in the air and light up an enemy’s position.
The late soldier joined the army in April of 2005 upon which he trained at Munkulungwe Army Battle Training Area in Ndola.
After successfully undergoing basic military training SSgt Mulima was posted to 10 Medium Regiment in Ndola.
In 2009, he was posted to Artillery Directorate in Lusaka, and in 2017 SSgt Mulima was posted to HQ 1 Artillery Brigade.
Zambia Army Commander Lt Gen Sitali Alibuzwi has described the late SSgt Mulima as a dedicated and career Soldier who died on duty.
