In a meeting all day, I could not listen to the Presidential press conference. I just finished listening to a recording now. Commendably to journalists, the most informative and engrossing part of the briefing was the question and answer section.
Together, the journalists asked topical, probing, and researched questions that tackled matters important to the public. The President, for his part, typically did not shy away from engagement or difficult questions.
He used his responses to provide, what I thought were, solid and informative clarifications on load shedding and Zambia’s relationship with the two world super powers – China and the US.
We also got to hear the President’s thoughts on the much needed Constitutional reforms, the various mining gridlock and his determination to repeal the defamation of the President Law.
I was quite amused at his jibe – I will remove the defamation law so that they can insult me properly and we see where that goes. (My paraphrase.) Overall, listening to just the Q&A would give one much needed information and explanations.
Very well done journalists! The rest of the press conference was mostly the usual chest beating by the President. He told us, again, what he has done well and how much better than their predecessors he and his government are.
To be fair, he did not make any claims one can argue with. The wins he set out have indeed been achieved and are big – free education, meal allowances, much lowered temperature in the country, huge savings for the Treasury.
I didn’t know about full payment of our dues to international bodies – UN, AU SADC but that’s most positive. I thought the President also made a very good case about the cost of living hardship Zambians are suffering. His view – there is no way out but economic growth.
Simply money won’t end up in citizen pockets unless it is made and his government is doing its damnest to turn the economy around.
His plans for 2023 were set out clearly too. Overall, it was an effective press conference.
I guess we just have to accept that the man is long winded and will make sure we don’t forget the crimson sins of those he replaced, and how good he thinks he is.
Ok, that kept me up well past my bedtime.
