Joseph Sikaonga, 23, is recovering at Kafue District Hospital after his nephew shot him and he sustained a gunshot wound to his right shoulder.
The incident, which occurred along the Great North Road between Ngwenya Village and Kafue District, has led to the nephew’s arrest and charges of unlawful firearm possession and discharge.
The injury occurred around 22:00 hours on Thursday, June 19.
60-year-old Christopher Chindila, an employee at Kafue District Hospital, reported the shooting to Kafue Police Station by mobile phone at 04:30 hours the following day.
According to Sikaonga’s initial account, he and his nephew, Pearson Kalengo, also 23, of Mtendere Compound, Lusaka, had been on a leisure trip to Kafue River Motel.
As they were driving back to Lusaka in a Toyota Belta BCC 941, their vehicle experienced mechanical problems.
It was during this roadside stop that the situation escalated.
Kalengo reportedly retrieved a homemade pistol from the vehicle and, while attempting to show how it worked, accidentally fired the weapon, striking Sikaonga.
Police officers who responded to the hospital confirmed the shooting.
According to police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga, preliminary investigation led to the recovery of the homemade firearm, one round of ammunition, and one spent cartridge, all of which are now held as exhibits.
He confirmed that Kalengo is currently in police custody.
“The suspect is currently in police custody and has been charged for being found in possession of a firearm without a licence and for the unlawful discharge of a firearm,” Hamoonga said.
“The victim remains admitted to Kafue District Hospital and is in stable condition. A docket has been opened, and investigations are ongoing.”
