GOVERNMENT has dispatched police officers and specialised public order units to secure and safeguard high traffic areas of illegal mine activities in the country.
This is in an effort to curb illegal mining activities and protect the safety and security of affected local communities.
This initiative is intended to address the growing concern over the threats to public safety and environmental degradation posed by illegal mining, while also fostering a culture of compliance with Zambia’s mining regulations and promoting responsible mining practices.
Minister of Mines and Mineral Development Paul Kabuswe expressed grave concern over the harmful effects of illegal mining activities which have not only led to loss of life but have also jeopardised the integrity of the mining industry and threatened national security.
Kabuswe highlighted a recent incident in Mufumbwe district where eight people tragically lost their lives after the earth collapsed on then at an illegal mine.
He said this in a joint ministerial statement with the Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security in Parliament yesterday.
“The recent tragedy in Mufumbwe District where eight individuals tragically lost their lives due to a mining accident, underscores the dire need to reinstate order and ensure improved safety measures in mining areas that have been overrun by illegal mining operations,” Kabuswe said.
Kabuswe emphasised government’s efforts to formalise artisanal and small-scale miners, issuing mining licenses through the establishment of mining cooperatives within communities.
He also reiterated government’s commitment to protecting its citizens, promoting responsible mining practices and maintaining national peace and security.
“We will not tolerate lawlessness and disorder that threaten our mining sector, our economy, and the wellbeing of our citizens,” Kabuswe emphasised.
“The government is committed to ensuring the safety of our people and securing the responsible exploitation of our mineral resources. I assure the nation that the situation is under control and we will continue to provide updates as necessary.”
Kabuswe announced that thousands of illegal miners had already been evacuated from the site of the collapsed mine in Mufumbwe district.
He disclosed that authorities also seized a significant amount of heavy duty machinery used in these unlawful mining activities including over 60 trucks, an excavator, and several light vehicles.
“These operations underscore our commitment to eliminating illegal mining activities and ensuring the safety and security of our people,” he said.
The minister further underscored that the government’s response to illegal mining is not a temporary measure, but rather a component of a larger, long-term strategy aimed at eradicating this illicit activity.
Kabuswe’s response was an urgent matter raised without notice by Mufumbwe Member of Parliament, regarding the devastating consequences of illegal mining in Mufumbwe and other regions in Zambia.
