Luanshya Copper Mine begins dewatering process at Shaft 2

LUANSHYA Copper Mine (LCM) has successfully conducted a trial run for the dewatering process at Shaft 28, marking a significant milestone in the revival of the dormant copper mine.

The water extracted will eventually flow into the Kafue River, potentially easing Zambia’s load shedding challenges.

Commencement of water pumping from Shaft 28 signals the imminent start of copper mining operations at the site, which has been dormant for over two decades.

President Hakainde Hichilema recently inaugurated the dewatering project, which has seen an investment of $500 million from the mine owners.

LCM Public Relations Manager Sydney Chileya confirmed the successful trial run of the first pump which operated for approximately four hours.

“we conducted our trial run, firing up the pump and running it for about three to four hours. This has given us confidence that everything is functioning as expected,” stated Chileya.

Chileya further disclosed plans to initiate testing on the second pump in the near future, emphasising the mine’s commitment to ensuring a smooth transition of water into the Kafue River.

“We should be soon testing the second pump. Water will eventually find itself in the Kafue river and we have already engaged Zesco,” he said.

With the successful initiation of the dewatering process, LCML is poised to breathe new life into the Shaft 28 and contribute to the country’s economic growth through sustainable mining practices and employment opportunities.
