LUANSHYA Copper Mine (LCM) has embarked on an innovative initiative to help Zesco use part of the 170 million cubic meters of water from Shaft 28 to bolster water levels at the Kafue Gorge Power Station.

LCM intends to utilise a portion of the abundant water resources available from it’s Shaft 28 to augment the water supply to the power station.

The mining company’s Corporate Affairs Manager Sydney Chileya outlined the company’s plan to extract water from three key shafts i.e. 14, 18 and 28 with the aim of channeling the majority of this water resource to support power generation activities at the Kafue Gorge Power Station.

Chileya emphasised the critical role of this initiative in mitigating the current power challenges faced by the nation.

“Zesco has come on board because this water will be instrumental in bolstering water levels in the Kafue,” stated Chileya. “Approximately two-thirds of the extracted water will be directed towards power generation.”

Furthermore, Chileya revealed LCM’s intention to commence the recruitment of personnel as early as June or July of the current year.

This decision is driven by the recognition that skilled labor is essential for the successful implementation of water pumping operations.

“Employing individuals will not only contribute to sustaining economic activities in the country but also ensure the smooth execution of our water extraction endeavors,” Chileya remarked.

This collaborative effort between LCM and Zesco underscores a proactive approach to addressing critical infrastructure challenges and enhancing the country’s power generation capacity, especially during this season of drought.
