MOPANI Copper Mines (MCM) and its unionised employees have reached a 13 percent salary increase agreement for 2024, ending a period of tension marked by worker concerns.

This agreement comes after recent discussions between the Zambian government, unions, and Mopani aimed to address worker grievances.

Notably, the Ministry of Information and Media recently visited the mine and highlighted the spread of misinformation among miners regarding wages and benefits.

“Miners were misled by some members of parliament with claims of US$1,000 salaries and free Toyota Mark-X vehicles,” stated Information permanent secretary Thabo Kawana “This misinformation is fueling anger amongst workers.”

However, the arrival of Mopani’s new equity partner, International Resources Holdings (IRH), appears to have influenced the outcome.

IRH’s investment has invigorated mining operations, leading to a revision of the initial 12 percent salary increase proposal.

The agreement outlines a 13 percent salary increase for unionised employees across the board.

Additionally, Mopani will introduce a bonus incentive scheme, demonstrating a commitment to employee recognition and reward.

The impact varies, with the highest-earning unionised worker receiving an increase of K1,400 and the lowest around K800.

Mopani Copper Mines employees relations manager, Justine Chiwama, commended the swift resolution and expressed gratitude to IRH for prioritisng employee welfare and efficient negotiation.

“We are in the process of introducing an incentive bonus for all unionised employees which will help them to participate in the running of this company,” stated Chiwama.

“We commit to fulfilling the incentive bonus and 441 new job opportunities have been created at the mine, with recruitment processes currently underway.”

Chiwama urged employees to continue exceeding expectations in their roles, emphasizing the potential for further incentives as a result of their dedication and commitment.
