Don’t take your life over problems, talk to someone, Hichilema urges citizens

PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema says citizens must not be thinking of taking their own lives when they fail to deal with problems but should instead seek help by talking to someone.

Speaking during the Easter Celebration Church Service at the Anglican Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Lusaka today, the Head of State said life’s challenges are inevitable and should not push anyone into making irreversible decisions.

President Hichilema noted that there was a misconception that some people, especially those in leadership, do not face problems, stating that everyone goes through difficulties.

The President said what matters most is how individuals handle such challenges, therefore, he urged citizens to remain calm and deal with situations wisely.

The President further encouraged people not to suffer in silence but to reach out to family members, friends, church leaders or even those in public office for help.

“Please do not [take your life]. Please don’t get angry. Talk to somebody. A shared problem is half solved,” President Hichilema said.

He added that people should not isolate themselves during difficult times but instead seek support from those around them.

“When we can’t deal with problems alone, there is always someone next door, in the family, in the church or even in public office who can help,” he said.

The Head of State said isolating oneself or reacting with anger often worsens situations, while opening up could lead to solutions.

He added that citizens must support one another during difficult times and build a caring society where people feel safe to seek help.
