Flash floods wash away Mphamba Bridge, reach Lundazi

FLASH floods have washed away Mphamba Bridge in Lundazi District, leaving the structure impassable and dangerous to all road users.

The Road Development Agency (RDA) said the damage has been caused by ongoing heavy rains, which have cut off access to the bridge leading to Chief Chitungulu’s area in Eastern Province.

According to RDA chief communications and corporate affairs manager Anthony Mulowa, the affected bridge is located on the Lundazi–Chitungulu (D104) Road, about one kilometre from the Lundazi Central Business District.

“As a result of the washed-away bridge is unsafe and should not be used by any traffic,” Mulowa warned.

He advised motorists and members of the public who were planning to use the route to immediately reschedule their travel plans until further notice to avoid accidents and loss of life.

Mulowa said RDA officers were already on the ground assessing the situation and had commenced remedial works to restore access as quickly as possible.

He added that the public will soon be updated on possible alternative arrangements.

The agency has since urged road users to remain cautious during the rainy season, as flash floods continue to pose a serious threat to road infrastructure across the country.
