UPND Monze Central aspiring candidate Victor Cheelo has called on Zambians to respect President Hakainde Hichilema’s office, saying those who may disagree with his leadership must still uphold the dignity of the presidency.
Commenting on the violent incident that happened in Chingola’s Chiwempala area during President Hichilema’s address yesterday, Cheelo described the act as a grave assault on Zambia’s peace and democracy.
“The incident on the Copperbelt is a stark reminder of the fragility of peace and stability in our nation. The stoning of President Hakainde Hichilema is an affront to our collective values of respect, dignity, and democracy,” he said.
Cheelo said the President represents the country’s unity and sovereignty and any attack on him amounts to an attack on the entire nation.
He urged citizens to reject all forms of violence and lawlessness and allow authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice.
“The government has a responsibility to ensure the President’s safety and security. We call upon the authorities to investigate this incident thoroughly and bring those responsible to book,” said Cheelo.
He further appealed for calm and unity, saying moments like these require citizens to rise above political differences and focus on maintaining national peace.
“This is a time for unity, not division. We must ensure our leaders can carry out their duties without fear or intimidation,” he added.
Cheelo reminded citizens that Zambians freely chose President Hichilema to lead the country and therefore, his office deserves respect and protection.
“We will not let a few individuals undermine the progress of our nation,” he said.
