Kawana addresses misconceptions over Hichilema’s presence at Hassan’s inauguration

MINISTRY of Information and Media permanent secretary, Thabo Kawana has advised Zambians to hold back on spreading negative criticism regarding president Hakainde Hichilema’s trip to Tanzania for Samia Suluhu Hassan’s inauguration ceremony which happened yesterday.

He stated that it is part of his diplomatic responsibility as the country’s leader.

Kawana’s remarks follow netizens’ questioning of the President’s decision to travel for the event following the post electoral unrest that led to numerous deaths and shut down of the internet in that country.

The permanent secretary clarified that there is no hidden agenda behind the trip stressing that it is normal for leaders to attend such occasions when invited.

“President Hichilema is attending the inauguration in Tanzania on behalf of every Zambian in honour of the invitation and there is nothing sinister about it,” Kawana said.

He added that attending the inauguration reflects Zambia’s respect and regard for regional partnerships and international cooperation.

“It is important for citizens to understand that such visits are part of maintaining good relations with our neighbours and strengthening regional unity,” he said

Kawana further encouraged social media users to be responsible when commenting on national matters, noting that spreading false narratives can mislead the public and create unnecessary division.
