TWO foreign nationals have landed in the Drug Enforcement’s hot boiling water after they were caught in separate attempts to smuggle illegal drugs through the country.
The first arrest took place at Chirundu border post, where a 33-year-old Tanzanian man was found in possession of 111.9 grammes of cannabis and 100 millilitres of hash oil (cannabis oil) hidden in syringes.
It is reported that he was travelling on a commercial bus from South Africa en route to Tanzania when he was intercepted during an intelligence-led operation.
In a separate case in Lusaka, 39-year-old South African national, was taken into custody after being found with six sachets of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) infused gummy candies.
According to DEC deputy public relations officer Theresa Mawere, the sweets contained 1.6% THC, well above the legal limit of 0.3% allowed in Zambia.
Mawere stated that these arrests are a direct result of increased surveillance at borders and stronger collaboration with regional partners.
“We are seeing a rise in the use of creative methods to smuggle drugs, including concealing substances in everyday items like syringes and candy,” she stated.
According to Mawere, the suspects have been detained and are awaiting court proceedings.
“We’re urging members of the public to stay alert and report suspicious behaviour. Combating drug trafficking is a shared responsibility.”
