He died a hero, Waana’s twin reveals details of brother’s last moments

THE twin brother of the late Waana Samulozela, who was shot dead alongside his step sister Womba Samulozela, has revealed how his brother died trying to save their sister, Womba Samulozela, from her abusive police officer husband who later turned the gun on himself.

Speaking before a grieving crowd at Arakan Barracks’ Army Chapel, Ntemesha Samulozela, recounted the grim timeline of events leading up to the fatal shooting that claimed two siblings on Tuesday, August 1.

Ntemesha said the family had initially agreed that Womba and her husband, Funkuta Muyembi, would settle in one of the houses their late father left behind. But things began to fall apart quickly.

“At first, everything seemed fine,” Ntemesha said.

“But after some time, he became violent. He started beating my sister, especially when people were not around.”

Despite the violence, Womba refused to leave, believing in love over her own safety.

The family called the husband’s relatives and held a meeting.

Both families agreed that it was best for the couple to separate.

The husband left with a few of his belongings, but secretly held onto a spare key to the house.

According to Ntemesha, Friday morning, the officer signed out an AK-47 rifle and ten rounds of ammunition, pretending he was going for an operation.

Instead, he went back to the house, quietly opened the front door and entered.

Inside, he found Womba sleeping in bed with her niece she had been keeping after the death of their uncle and without hesitation, he pointed the gun at her and shot her twice in the chest.

“He told her he was going to kill her. My sister cried. Then he shot her twice in the chest,” Ntemesha recounted.

Hearing the commotion, Waana, who was sleeping in the next room rushed in to confront the danger.

“My brother tried to stop him. He grabbed him from behind, but the man elbowed him off, turned around and shot him in the back,” Ntemesha said.

“He died trying to protect our sister.”

Shortly after the double murder, the gunman turned the weapon on himself and took his life.

And as the family struggles to process the grief, Ntemesha said they have been hurt even more by false and malicious rumours spreading online, suggesting that there was something inappropriate between Waana and Womba.

According to rumours, the shooter allegedly found the two deceased sleeping on the same bed, an act which reportedly fuelled suspicions of an inappropriate relationship between the step-siblings.

Waana was laid to rest yesterday at Leopards Hill Memorial Park, while Womba was buried on Monday in Solwezi.

The deceased is survived by four daughters and a wife.
