COPPER Queens coach Nora Häuptle has hinted at a timely boost for her side, revealing that goalkeeper Catherine Musonda and winger Xiomara Mapepa could make a return to action in today’s crucial Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAfCON) Group A match against Senegal.
The duo, who both missed Zambia’s opening match against Morocco due to injury, could be available for selection depending on their final fitness assessment before kick-off.
Speaking during the team’s pre-match briefing, Hauptle revealed that both Musonda and Mapepa had rejoined the squad for training sessions and would be closely monitored ahead of the Senegal game.
“Catherine Musonda, our first-choice goalkeeper, was out for the first game but she was part of our training session as well as Xiomala Mapepa. We need to see the improvement up to tomorrow and then we can give you an update if they are in the lineup,” Häuptle stated.
Musonda’s safe hands and commanding presence in goal were missed in the first match, while Mapepa’s pace and sharp attacking instincts could be crucial against a Senegal side known for their physical play.
Meanwhile, the Copper Queens coach expressed confidence in her team’s preparations, saying the players had recovered well from the Morocco game and were in high spirits.
She revealed that the technical bench had carried out an in-depth analysis of the previous match and was working on improving ball possession and defensive coordination.
Nora also stated that the team was ready to counter Senegal’s physical style of play, describing Zambia as one of the strongest teams in terms of fast transitions in the tournament.
With Senegal coming into the match off a commanding 4-0 win over DR Congo, the Copper Queens know they need all hands on deck.

Furthermore, star striker Racheal Kundananji said the team has already moved on from the Morocco result and is locked in on Senegal.
“We already forgot about the game because we don’t want to go back again,” Kundananji said.
She admitted Senegal’s 4-0 win in their opener might look scary on paper, but she laughed off any talks of pressure creeping into the Zambian camp.
“This game is very important for us. It’s our second step in this tournament. We already passed one step with Morocco, now we just need to grab this one,” added Kundananji.
