THE United Party for National Development (UPND) has asked international bodies to help bring PF member of the central committee Emmanuel Mwamba back to Zambia, saying he is running away from the law.
UPND Media Director Mark Simuuwe said the party has written to SADC, the US Embassy, the European Union and the UNHCR.
The UPND wrote to the US Embassy, insisting that Mwamba is not a legitimate asylum seeker but someone deliberately running away from accountability.
The same concerns were raised with the EU and UNHCR, where the party accused Mwamba of abusing asylum mechanisms for political gain.
Simuuwe said the ruling party is concerned that Mwamba, is telling people that he is being persecuted, when in fact he left the country by choice.
He explained that at no time was Mwamba under house arrest and that his passport was never taken away from him.
According to the UPND, Mwamba is spreading false information to create the impression that he is seeking political asylum, something the party said is not true.
“Zambia is a democratic country that upholds the rule of law, where all citizens, regardless of political affiliation, are accountable to the courts,” Simuuwe stated.
Emmanuel Mwamba, a former diplomat and media personality, has in recent months become one of the most vocal critics of the UPND administration from abroad.
He left Zambia earlier this year and has since claimed that he escaped due to alleged political persecution and threats to his safety.
However, the UPND media director insisted that Mwamba is simply avoiding the legal process and must be brought back to stand before the courts.
