THE ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) says its presidential seat is now open for contestation as the party conducts its intra-party elections.
UPND Elections Committee Chairperson Likando Mufalali disclosed that any eligible member wishing to contest for the party presidency is free to do so.
Speaking during a press briefing this afternoon, Mufalali said the process was open and in line with the party constitution, which allows members in good standing to file nominations and participate in the elections.
“I would want to indicate to you that, as I indicated earlier, the positions are open, including that of the president. For those who would want to contest or want to file nominations to aspire for the seat of the president, it’s open. And those who want to file as president of the party, they can come through,” said Mufalali.
He explained that the elections had already commenced from the grassroots, with members contesting positions from branch level going upwards to the general assembly where the party president will be elected.
Mufalali further stated that the UPND does not entertain shortcuts in its electoral process, adding that all members must follow laid down procedures.
He also urged members to maintain peace and unity during the elections, stating that the process was meant to strengthen the party.
