HUMAN Rights commissioner Laura Miti says Chawama member of parliament Tasila Lungu should come back to work until the date of her father, former President Edgar Lungu’s burial is set.
Tasila has remained away from her parliamentary duties since the death of her father which hapoened five months ago.
In a Facebook post, Miti criticised the situation, saying there was no workplace that allows an employee to stay away indefinitely and continue drawing a salary.
“There is no justifiable reason why taxpayers should continue to pay a salary for a Member of Parliament, who is waiting for a burial that does not even have a date,” Miti wrote on her Facebook page.
Miti argued that ordinary human resource protocols, including unpaid leave or half-pay, should apply.
The commissioner argued that the fact that Tasila is the daughter of a former president should not grant her special treatment.
“Surely, there is a point at which plain logic has to come into play in this matter,” Miti added.
She warned that this case could set a precedent for other MPs facing personal emergencies and Parliament is expected to provide clarity on leave policies in such circumstances.
