SALT SANA: Followers barbeque Kalaba for opposing 24 hour economy

CITIZENS First has found himself on the receiving end of social media grilling from his own followers after he rediculed government’s introduction of a 24-hour economy, which the majority have described as beneficial.

Kalaba, who appeared unimpressed with Cabinet’s decision, took to Facebook to argue that Zambia has “no economy to talk about”.

But instead of rallying behind him, Kalaba’s followers turned the comment section into a roasting chamber, with over 3,500 comments, many challenging his stance and calling for constructive alternatives.

Last year, Bloomberg reported that Zambia’s economy showed signs of recovery with projections placing growth above six percent.

Early this year, the Zambian Kwacha emerged as the world’s best performing currency, according to a report by Bloomberg.

Driven by high copper prices, improved agricultural output and renewed investor confidence, the country’s economic rebound has given weight to policy shifts such as the 24-hour economy.

However, Kalaba’s criticism has now sparked debate online, with citizens demanding not just opposition but ideas that can move the country forward.

One user, Sydney Filaba, told Kalaba that opposition should not be about rejecting everything.

“Tefyonse (it’s not everything) you oppose, give solutions and you will be relevant in politics,” Filaba commented.

Another user, Don Mweemba, suggested Kalaba’s criticism was out of touch with reality.

“Just because you sleep at 19:00 hours to 07:00 hours doesn’t mean everyone is sleeping… it’s a good move, you are just looking at it from the opposition point of view,” he commented.

Steven Shibwengo added his voice, questioning the approach of such opposition.

“I didn’t know that being in opposition you must disagree with everything,” he wrote.

Yesterday, Chief Government spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa announced that Cabinet officially gave green light for businesses to stay open 24 hours.
