FORMER deputy finance Minister in the MMD government Newton Ng’uni’s political comeback attempt in the Mfuwe parliamentary by-election has crumbled before it even began after he failed to file his nomination under the National Congress Party (NCP) ticket due to late arrival.

Ng’uni, who was eyeing a Mfuwe Parliamentary seat showed up at the Civic Centre in Lavushimanda after the nomination window had already closed.
Lucky enough NCP acting quickly before their window closed, place another candidate.
With the clock refusing to wait for anyone, the NCP was left scrambling to save face and swiftly filed in Brian Kunda as its official candidate for the August 7 by-election.
The race is now officially on, but for Newton Ng’uni, the dream of going to Parliament has been dashed at the nomination gate, all because of poor timekeeping.
Mfuwe Constituency returning officer Gilbert Mwango officially opened the nomination centre right on the dot at 09:00 hours this morning with the duration ending at 15:00 hours.
According to the Electoral Commission of Zambia’s nomination list, five candidates are now in the race, including four from political parties and one independent hopeful, all eager to take the parliamentary seat.
The parties that have successfully filed in are the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND), the Socialist Party (SP), Leadership Movement, and the New Congress Party (NCP).
This by-election culminated from the conviction of former MP Maureen Mabonga, who was sentenced to eight months simple imprisonment and fined K1,600 for seditious practices in May.
