PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema has reiterated his assurance to the church that government will continue to uphold freedom of worship across the country.
Officiating at the United Church of Zambia (UCZ) 60th anniversary celebrations in Kabwe yesterday, President Hichilema said freedom of worship was a constitutional right that government was committed to respecting at all times.
He described the UCZ’s 60 year journey as a story of faith, action, unity and diversity and urged churches to continue embracing differences among congregants.
“God makes us differently, different heights and features, but all created in hi image,” the President said, adding that language must never be a source of division.
“Speaking different languages should never be a source of division but should be more of deepening our faith in God and his diversity endowed in us in the manner we speak our language. All our languages are one, meant to communicate to one another including praising God effectively.”
He explained that the country’s many languages were gifts meant to deepen faith and improve connection among believers, especially when praising God.
President Hichilema further acknowledged the role the church plays in guiding the nation morally and encouraged citizens to continue supporting church activities.
“Our contributions to the church are not favours, but investments in shared progress,” he said.
“Whenever we make contributions to the church, we are not doing the church a favour, we are investing in God’s house, evangelism and schools. The church is not a business house, it depends on its members.”
