Ex-ZAMMSA boss, 15 others spend night behind bars

FORMER Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency (ZAMMSA) Director General Victor Nyasulu and 15 others, spent the cold night police detention following chaotic scenes that unfolded outside the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) headquarters in Lusaka yesterday.

According to the Zambia Police Service, the group was arrested yesterday after they blocked traffic and conducted themselves in a manner likely to disturb public peace along Chachacha Road and Church Road.

The arrests came shortly after Brian Mundubile’s appearance before the ACC, where the Mporokoso lawmaker had been summoned for questioning over road construction contracts worth over K1.5 billion.

But Nyasulu, who had escorted Mundubile, found himself in a heated exchange with police officers right outside the commission premises.

Armed with confidence and finger-pointing energy, he attempted to out-argue officers who had clearly not signed up for a public debate.

However, before his submissions could gather momentum, officers moved in and scooped him in before tossing him into the back of a CDF-purchased Land Cruiser for a test drive to Lusaka Central Police.

As if that was not enough to attract attention, the situation escalated as a group of sympathizers and curious onlookers clogged the road and blocked traffic.

By press time, Police spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi confirmed and said the group conducted themselves in a manner likely to disturb public peace, prompting officers to round them up one by one.

“All the 16 suspects are currently in custody and will appear in court soon,” Chilabi stated.

“The arrested persons include:
Chanda Chishimba, aged 50, Collins Sinkala, aged 20, Daniel Mbulo, aged 28, Francis Simbeye, aged 41, Grace Masao, aged 32, Jack Kasonde, aged 24, Luckson Tembo, aged 27, Mbita Mpazi, aged 46, Paul Zulu, aged 45, Reuben Soko, aged 50, Ricky Clayton Chambawilo, aged 43, Shadreck Phiri, aged 20, Simon Sikazwe, aged 35, Sydney Chanda, aged 20, Timothy Banda, aged 28 and Victor Nyasulu, aged 56″

Police explained that the situation escalated as more people gathered and blocked the road and turning the busy stretch into a scene of confusion, murmurs and mobile phone journalism.

Meanwhile, the ACC confirmed that Mundubile had been interviewed as part of ongoing investigations.

ACC Acting head of corporate communication Chilufya Chisanga said the lawmaker fully cooperated with investigators during the process.
