SPEAKER of the National Assembly Nelly Mutti has put two opposition members of parliament on notice, demanding they substantiate their allegations that Zesco is being used by private power producers to import and export electricity.
Mutti directed Mpika MP Francis Kapyanga and Mkushi South MP Davies Chisopa to present concrete evidence before the house to support their allegations.
The directive follows repeated statements by the two lawmakers suggesting that middlemen are involved in power import and export deals under Zesco, claims the speaker said must now be proven or withdrawn.
Mutti stressed that parliament cannot allow unverified allegations to go unchallenged, particularly when they involve national institutions like Zesco.
“Members are free to debate, but serious claims of this nature must be backed by evidence. You cannot make accusations of wrongdoing without facts,” she said.
She gave the MPs until Friday next week to bring their evidence on the table of the house, warning that failure to do so could result in further parliamentary action.
Mutti reminded the MPs that debates in the house must be guided by truth, decorum and accountability, not hearsay or speculation.
“Let us protect the integrity of this House. When you speak here, you are speaking to the nation. It is important that your words are credible,” Mutti added.
