The incident unfolded after a 35-year-old Yango driver from Ng’ombe Compound reported that he was attacked on Friday last week, around 03:00 hours by three men posing as customers.

After booking his ride through the Yango app, the suspects led him to Chibolya Grounds, where they brandished knives, stole his Samsung Note 8 phone worth K3,000 and K350 in cash, and fled the scene.

But five days later, the tables turned.

In the early hours of yesterday, the same driver received another booking, this time from the exact same phone number used during then previous attack.

Sensing a setup, he immediately alerted officers at Los Angeles Police Post under Kanyama Police Station, who acted swiftly.

Accompanied by the police, the driver proceeded to the pickup point near Chibolya grounds, the very location of the first robbery.

As a male suspect entered the vehicle, the driver spotted three other men emerging from nearby makeshift shelters and sensing imminent danger, he bolted from the car.

Police officers who had been hiding nearby responded instantly.

According to police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga who confirmed the incident, a brief foot chase ensued and one suspect who was later identified as Gift Banda, 29, was captured.

Hamoonga stated that the other accomplices managed to escape and are currently being pursued.

“The suspect is in police custody and is assisting with ongoing investigations. He is expected to face charges under Section 292 of the Penal Code, which deals with robbery offenses,” Hamoonga said.

Hamoonga also praised the quick thinking and bravery of the driver, whose alertness and cooperation were key to the successful arrest.

“The Zambia Police Service commends the alertness and cooperation of the complainant, which led to the successful arrest of one suspect. Members of the public are urged to continue collaborating with the Police by promptly reporting any suspicious activities in their areas,” added Hamoonga.
