Thousands of Western Province locals benefiting from Kuomboka – Sikumba

TOURISM Minister Rodney Sikumba says the Kuomboka Traditional Ceremony of the Lozi people remains one of Zambia’s most iconic cultural events, with thousands of people in Western Province and surrounding areas benefiting economically from it.

In an interview, Sikumba said Kuomboka is among the country’s most significant traditional ceremonies and continues to play a major role in promoting domestic tourism and supporting local businesses.

The Minister also noted that last year, the Ministry of Tourism supported close to 99 traditional ceremonies across the country, with 36 of them attended by President Hakainde Hichilema.

He said the Kuomboka ceremony, in particular has brought notable economic benefits to Mongu and nearby areas, as most accommodation facilities and camping sites have been fully booked, largely by local tourists.

“The economy of Mongu and surrounding areas is benefiting from this ceremony. Zambia should cherish ceremonies like this because they help us remain rooted in our culture. It also draws a lot of local tourists. Most accommodation places are booked, and camping sites are also full, ” he said.

He encouraged Zambia’s to promote their culture by being Frontline ambassadors in getting the country known.

The Kuomboka Traditional Ceremony is taking place today in Mongu District of Western Province, with President Hichilema expected to grace the event.

This year’s theme places great emphasis on the importance of unity and collective action in preserving cultural heritage and natural resources.

The Nalikwanda is expected to dock at Mulamba Harbour in Mongu instead of the traditional Nayuma Harbour in Limulunga.

According to organisers, the change in route is temporary and strategic and the decision was made to avoid challenges along the Lealui-Limulunga route through the Mwayowamo Canal, which has become heavily silted due to years of sediment build up.
