The ambitious undertaking includes laying 8 kilometers of cable beneath Lake Bangweulu, a first of its kind for Zambia.
The project involves the installation of a 32-kilometer electricity network extending from Chilubi Island to Chishi Island.

Eight kilometers of this network will consist of specially designed submarine cables engineered for a lifespan of over 50 years underwater, according to REA.
“This one may be out of the ordinary. But it’s methodical, meticulous and completely safe,” REA stated regarding the unique nature of the project.
A local contractor is executing the project, which REA hails as a significant stride in rural electrification, particularly for isolated island communities.
The Authority shared that the Zambia Army’s involvement underscores the complex technical and logistical demands of operating in the challenging water-based environment of Lake Bangweulu.
Upon completion, the initiative is expected to stimulate economic growth and improve the quality of life for Chishi Island residents.
