Yesterday, a newborn baby boy miraculously cheated death after his 22-year-old mother, Ngula Nyambe, allegedly attempted to dispose of him in a pit latrine in Namalimba Village.
The infant is now stable and receiving crucial medical care, while Nyambe is in police custody.
According to police, the incident unfolded around 04:00 hours in Chief Nalubamba’s area.
Southern Province police commanding officer Auxensio Daka revealed that Nyambe had reportedly kept her pregnancy a secret from her family, fearing their disapproval of an out-of-wedlock birth or her lack of financial stability.
When labour pains struck in the early hours, she asked her younger cousin to accompany her to the toilet.
It was there that she reportedly delivered the baby and then, in a desperate act, threw him into the pit latrine.
The cousin, witnessing the ordeal, immediately informed her mother.
Swiftly, the mother reached out to the local headman, who wasted no time in organising a rescue effort to retrieve the tiny infant from the latrine’s depths.
“The baby was then rushed to the Namwala Central Hospital, where medical professionals evaluated his condition and confirmed that he was stable,” Daka stated.
As of today, the baby remains under the care of healthcare professionals, receiving appropriate medical attention.
Ngula Nyambe has been arrested and is currently in police custody, awaiting her court appearance.
