The incident, confirmed by Eastern Province police commissioner Robertson Mweemba, occurred Thursday, around 19:00 hours.

It is reported that the victim, Nyasha Phiri, was sitting on a mat near a fire with her father, Danny Phiri, while her mother, Modester Lungu, prepared supper outside their home.

“As they were outside, a hyena came from nowhere, attacked the victim, who was sitting on a mat, and ran away with her,” Mweemba stated.

All the fear left Phiri whose adrenaline rush kicked in with a dose of courage, in order to rescue his baby.

He pursued the hyena like Delilah pursued the secret to Samson’s strength in the bible.

Into the gathering dusk and, against all odds, managed to rescue his daughter from its jaws.

However, Nyasha had already suffered grievous injuries to her face during the attack.

The gravely injured toddler was rushed to Lumezi District Hospital, where she was admitted for urgent medical attention.

Due to her unstable condition, she was subsequently referred to Chipata Central Hospital for further specialised care.
