The fire, which broke out around 13:00 hours at Flat No. 7, Twibukishe Flats near Kitwe Trades, gutted the room belonging to Esther Mulenga, destroying a bed, clothes, fridge, television set, stove, blankets, and even her school materials were all consumed by the raging flames.
Neighbours watched helplessly as smoke billowed from the flat, some shouting in panic before the sirens of fire tenders drowned the sound.
It took a combined rescue of Kitwe Fire Brigade, Mopani Fire Brigade and Kalulushi Fire Brigade to bring the blaze under control.
With two hose lengths and water from a Mopani fire tender, the teams battled the inferno until only steam rose from what was once a young woman’s bedroom.
Police officers from Kitwe Central Police Station were also on hand to secure the scene.
Kitwe City Council confirmed the incident and revealed the suspected cause of the blaze revealing that no life was lost, however, the tragedy has left Esther stripped of essentials.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspected cause of the fire was an electrical fault,” Kitwe City Council stated.
The Council has since advised Kitwe residents to be extra vigilant with electrical appliances and faulty wiring, warning that one careless spark is all it takes to erase a lifetime of belongings.
