NORTHERN Province chiefs’ retainers have appealed to government to increase their K2,300 monthly salaries, arguing that the money is not enough to meet their daily needs and that many of them are struggling to marry in their youth.

Speaking on behalf of their colleagues in an interview, Safeli Sichula of Nsokolo Chiefdom and Neverson Kaputula of Mukupa Katandula Chiefdom said they work hard but only take home K2,300 at the end of the month.
The duo explained that sometimes they face public ridicule, even from workers at Food Reserve Agency (FRA) depots, because of their meagre pay.
They added that their work comes with no holidays, long hours, and late knock-offs, leaving them with no time to take on piecework for extra income.
“Imilimo tubomba ikulu saana, (the kind of work we do is too hard.) We fail to provide adequately for our families. Government should look at welfare,” said Safeli.
“Some of our friends are even failing to marry because of the little money we get,” stated Neverson.
