“I have a wife but it’s you I love,” were the words of 32-year-old William Banda to his mistress after he spilled the beans of being married.

This notorious line, a well-known feature of the city’s romantic landscape, was uttered by a cunning Lusaka man in the Matero Local Court, as he attempted to justify his romantic involvement with Majory Inambao, 25, the woman who sued him for not taking responsibility for second seed he help plant in her biological garden.

It is believed Banda, hailing from Lilanda, managed to fabricate a web of lies, keeping his lover in the dark about his marital status until she announced her pregnancy.

Under the guise of a charming suitor, Banda, swept his unsuspecting partner off her feet, convincing her that he was wholeheartedly committed to their relationship and had no hidden ties, but it was only when Inambao revealed that she was pregnant that his deceit came to light, exposing his true marital status.

The two met in 2022, and began an intimate relationship which blossomed, appearing picture-perfect from the outside until the issue of the pregnancy came in.

It was revealed that throughout their relationship, Banda had maintained the guise of being a single man, leading Inambao to believe that they had a promising future together.

The charade shattered when Inambao discovered she was pregnant and told Banda.

Banda then confessed his marriage and revealed that his wife was also expecting.

The couple separated but reconnected after their first child’s birth, only for a second pregnancy to occur. Now, Banda is refusing to provide financial support.

“When he came to see our firstborn, that’s when I got pregnant again but now he has been resistant to offering any financial support for the new pregnancy, leaving me in a challenging predicament with a second child on the way,” the three month pregnant woman lamented.

Inambao testified before the Matero Local Court that she believed Banda was single due to the fact that he frequently slept over at her place, creating an illusion of intimacy and commitment.

“He would stay overnight at my house and I thought it was because he was serious about our relationship, not because he was hiding something from me,” she revealed.

Taking the stand, Banda tried to justify his actions with the well-worn phrase, “I have a wife but it’s you I love.”

He claimed that he genuinely liked Nambao, but after losing his job, he could no longer afford to support her.

Banda offered to pay K500 a month, a sum he said was all he could manage.

Senior Magistrate Lewis Mumba was not swayed by Banda’s plea as he saw a man disrespecting his marriage and trying to avoid his responsibilities.

The court upheld Nambao’s claim, ordering Banda to pay K800 per month for pregnancy maintenance until the baby is delivered, in addition to providing all necessary baby items.
