Hunter stumbles on remains of Chama man missing for over a year

HUMAN remains believed to belong to a 30-year-old man who went missing more than a year ago have been discovered in Chama District of Eastern Province.

Eastern Province police commanding officer Robertson Mweemba confirmed that the remains were found on Friday March 20, around 14:00 hours in a bushy area of Ziba under Chief Kambombo.

The discovery was reported to Chama Police Station yesterday, at about 18:00 hours, after villagers alerted local authorities.

According to information provided to police, the remains were first spotted by a hunter, Samson Luhanga, who was searching for game in the area.

He later returned to the village and informed other residents, prompting a group to revisit the site.

One of the villagers, Clifford Goma, 45, identified the remains as those of his son, Malama Goma, who had been missing since September 15, 2024.

He said he recognised the clothing found at the scene as matching what his son was wearing when he disappeared.

Malama, who was reported to have been suffering from a mental illness, was last seen around 09:00 hours on the day he went missing in Chitanda Village.

A missing person report was filed at Chama Police Station shortly after his disappearance.

Police have since advised the family to proceed with burial due to the remote location of the site and poor road access.

“Relatives have been advised to bury the same remains and instructed to mark the grave for possible exhumation and postmortem examination results to ascertain the cause of death,” Mweemba said.

He revealed that there are currently no signs of foul play, but investigations remain open pending any further developments.
