The accident occurred yesterday at around 16:20 hours near Petroda Filling Station and involved a Volvo truck with trailer and a Toyota Vitz.

According to Police assistant public relations officer Godfrey Chilabi, the Volvo truck and trailer, bearing registration numbers ALK 7690 (horse) and ALJ 3908 (trailer), is owned by Gemmy Trading Limited and was being driven by Lameck Mumba of Chipata Compound in Lusaka.

Mumba sustained injuries in the crash and was rushed to an undisclosed health facility and the truck’s front end was extensively damaged.

Chilabi revealed that the second vehicle, a Toyota Vitz registration number BBA 9629 ZM, was driven by 46 year old Brian Mwense of Chongwe Township.

Mwense died on the spot along with his three passengers including 36 year old Winston Mutapa, a laboratory technician at Chongwe District Hospital and two unidentified adults.

Police described the unidentified victims as a woman estimated to be between 38 and 40 years old and a man believed to be between 28 and 32 years old.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the collision happened when the Volvo truck, travelling from Chongwe towards Lusaka, failed to keep to its near side of the road and struck the Toyota Vitz, which was coming from the opposite direction and had the right of way.

The force of the impact caused the truck to come to rest on top of the smaller car.

The remains of the deceased have been taken to Chongwe District Hospital Mortuary where they are awaiting formal identification and postmortem examinations.

“Police are conducting further investigations into the circumstances of this fatal road traffic accident,” said Chilabi.
