A MID-DAY bank run has turned into a deadly ambush after armed criminals shot and killed a Chinese businessman right at the gate of his Woodlands home before speeding off with cash and other valuables.
According to police, 56-year-old Yu Bin had driven to Chilenje yesterday morning to withdraw money.
When he returned home just after midday and waited for the gate to open, two criminals who had been trailing him from the bank on a motorbike pulled up, shot him at close range and grabbed the cash he had withdrawn.
His wife, 57-year-old Diane Yuan, rushed out after hearing the gunshot, only to find her husband bleeding inside their Chevrolet vehicle.
The victim was then rushed to the scene and transported to Maina Soko Medical Centre, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Police spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi confirmed the incident and described the killing as a targeted attack.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects were trailing him from the bank before they shot him and fled with an undisclosed amount of money,” Chilabi stated.
The attackers are believed to have escaped on a motorbike whose registration number has not yet been established.
The body of the deceased was deposited at Maina Soko Medical Centre mortuary awaiting a postmortem.
Chilabi said Police have launched a manhunt for the killers and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
