AFTER three days of searching and sleepless nights, a family in Chipata’s Chief Mpezeni area was met with heartbreak when they found their mentally challenged sister drowned in a disused well.
The woman, whose name was not disclosed, was reported missing on July 31, 2025, around 18:00 hours from Mukudyabwino Farm.
Her brother, 48-year-old Bernard Banda of Johnson Village of Lundazi told the police that the family searched tirelessly but never thought to look inside the old, unused well at the farm.
The tragic discovery was made after Bernard went to check the open well, only to be met by the haunting sight of his sister’s lifeless body floating inside.
After the matter was reported at Chipata Central Police Station around 11:45 hours, police officers teamed up with the Chipata Municipal Council Fire Brigade and rushed to the scene to retrieve the body.
According to Eastern Province police commanding officer Robertson Mweemba, no injuries were found on the woman’s body and foul play is not suspected.
“Physical inspection of the body was conducted. No physical injuries were observed on the body of the deceased. The body has since been handed over to the relatives for burial as no foul play was suspected,” stated Mweemba.
