According to police reports issued by Eastern Province police commissioner Robertson Mweemba, the deceased, Getrude Nyirenda, was the second wife of 47 year old Lengani Msimuko, who is married to two women.

The first wife, Anna Tembo, 40, is said to have been suffering from severe stomach pains since 2024.

And so, in an attempt to find relief, Anna sought spiritual guidance from a Pentecostal papa near Kanyanga Mission Health Centre.

The prophet allegedly told her that her illness was caused by witchcraft, specifically blaming her co-wife, Getrude, who has now become history.

Following this, Anna informed her husband, Lengani, who confronted Getrude and warned her to stop bewitching her Mail guru.

However, the accusations did not end there.

Earlier this month, Anna’s stomach pains resurfaced and on Saturday, August 9, she again consulted a different ‘prophet’, who reinforced the earlier claim that Getrude was behind her suffering.

This prompted Anna to report the matter once more to her husband.

On Monday, at approximately 05:00 hours, the husband confronted hisbGetrude, urging her to stop bewitching the first wife.

The confrontation deeply affected Getrude, resulting into a desperate act of taking some pesticide the family had intended to use for preserving maize and swallowed them in Lengani’s presence.

She was immediately rushed to Kanyanga Mission Health Centre and admitted for treatment.

Despite medical efforts, Getrude succumbed to the poisoning and passed away later that afternoon at around 17:00 hours.

“Her body has since been deposited at Chasefu Mini Hospital mortuary, where it awaits post-mortem examinations,” said Mweemba.
