CDF powers Kaoma district hospital with solar

HEALTHCARE delivery at Kaoma District Hospital has received a major lift following the installation of a 24 Kilovolt-Ampere (KV) solar power system, funded through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), to address the persistent problem of electricity outages.

The K569,000 project, implemented by Kaoma Town Council, is set to reduce the hospital’s dependency on the national grid and ensuring uninterrupted healthcare services, especially in critical units such as maternity, theatre, and emergency care.

The hospital, which serves hundreds of patients has in the past faced severe challenges due to load shedding, with oxygen machines and other life-saving equipment being forced offline during outages.

The solar power system is now expected to bring stability and efficiency to the hospital’s operations.

Kaoma District Health Administrative Officer Dr. Henry Kalunga said the project has come at the right time when consistent power supply is a matter of life and death in many public health institutions.

“This development will address that critical problem of load shedding and significantly reduce the number of patients turned away due to power disruptions, thereby improving overall service quality and safety within the facility,” he said.

Furthermore, the solar system will also help preserve essential medicines and vaccines which require constant refrigeration, ensuring that patients receive safe and effective treatment.

The solar installation at Kaoma District Hospital is one of the latest CDF-funded projects aimed at improving public service delivery in the district, and the local authority is optimistic that similar interventions will be rolled out to other health facilities facing power supply challenges.
