However, their luck dried up faster than water splashed on a hot bonnet after police dug up their dirty secret.

The trio, comprising Bertha Phiri, Shadreck Daka and Emmanuel Mwale, aged 22, 25, and 20 respectively, are cooling off in police cells after they stole and buried the cash within the premises of Wax Car Wash in Luangwa Township in Kabwe.

According to Central Province Police Commissioner Charity Munganga, the incident happened Monday, between 09:00 and 10:00 hours, when a client dropped off his vehicle for washing unaware that the sparkle service would turn into a K200,000 heist.

After realising the money was missing, a report was made and police swung into action, tracking down the suspects, who later confessed and led officers to the exact spot where they had buried the loot.

“Police officers in Kabwe have arrested three suspects for the theft of K200,000 from a motor vehicle taken for washing at Wax Car Wash. The entire amount has been recovered, and the suspects will appear in court soon,” said Munganga.

The stolen cash has since been recovered in full, dusty but intact, while the trio’s dreams of sudden riches have been reduced to a muddy mess behind bars where they will exchange their car wash working suits with the plain orange suits.
