BREAKING: Pretoria Court sets Friday for Lungu family appeal hearing

THE Pretoria High Court in South Africa has set Friday, 15th August 2025, as the date to hear an application by former first lady Esther Lungu and seven others seeking leave to appeal against a ruling that allowed the repatriation of the late former president Edgar Lungu’s remains to Zambia.

In a notice seen by Kalemba and addressed to the legal teams for both parties, Justice Potterill’s chambers confirmed that the matter will be heard at 09:00.

The court also directed that any further documents, apart from possible heads of argument, must be filed by tomorrow at 15:00.

The appeal bid follows a ruling that cleared the way for the Zambian government to transport the late president’s remains from South Africa for burial in Zambia.

This is a decision the Lungu family has been contesting.

“We take note of the application for leave to appeal and have determined Friday the 15th
of August 2025 at 09:00 as the date of hearing for the application for leave to appeal.”

“Kindly advise if any papers are to be filed excepting for possible heads of argument and
if so, that such documents be filed on or before Wednesday 13 August 2025 at 15:00,” read the notice.
