PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema says the government can no longer turn a blind eye on the effects of deforestation and the devastating effects it posts on livelihood.
The President said this on Friday, when he addressed Parliament on the application of national values and principles, as contained in Articles 8 and 9 of the Constitution of Zambia.
He noted that the negative effects of deforestation are too noticeable and that the government is partnering with the private sector to plant, across the country, in excess of two million trees over the next five years.
“Once again, I urge everyone to take part in tree planting if we are to make significant impact in protecting the environment,” President Hichilema said.
President Hichilema said the government, through the 2022 adopted national community-based natural resources management policy, is providing a framework for promoting community participation and strengthening of governance in the management of natural resources at community level.
“Our local communities are the gate-keepers of our natural resources. We have therefore embraced the paradigm of strong community involvement in the management of our resources,” he said.
The President further hailed government institutions and stakeholders that are responding timely to climate-related calamities like the current floods in selected parts of Zambia.
