A Zambia National Service (ZNS) officer in Ndola is gasping for life in hospital after a suspected smuggler ran him over while his colleague permanently lost his eye after suspected smugglers stoned him.
This happened while the service men went on an anti snuggling operation.
The confrontation between ZNS troops and suspected smugglers at Konkola Check Point also led to the death of two people.
ZNS command expressed regret over the loss of lives.
According to ZNS chief of public relations and liaison Brigadier General Mulenga Nyone, the troops operate under strict orders not to discharge their firearms in ways that could lead to loss of life.
However, Brig Gen Nyone noted that smugglers have increasingly become confrontational to the extent of ignoring warnings and in some cases attacking enforcement officers.
“These are the realities and sacrifices our personnel endure in the line of duty; sacrifices that often go unnoticed,” Brig Gen Nyone said.
“We must all remember that the work ZNS is undertaking is not for self-interest but to promote and safeguard the wellbeing of the Zambian people.”
She also reminded the public that government has already provided legal avenues for the export of maize and related products and encouraged traders to follow these procedures rather than engaging in illegal trade.
Investigations into the Chililabombwe shooting incident are ongoing, with ZNS pledging full cooperation with the Zambia police and other relevant authorities.
