FROM a distance, the business of ordering Roses, lily’s, Iris, daisy and jasmine flowers to make bouquets can seem to be a boring and loss-making business.
But that view change once you meet a person like 37 year old Cecilia Sakala, who has built herself from flowers.
Cecilia, of Lusaka west, is a registered owner of Beautiful Flowers beautiful hamper/Duchess enterprises, a business that she has relied upon for 10 years.
All that Cecilia does is to sell flowers to meet her basic needs.
She spared minutes off her pre-valentine busy orders to talk to Kalemba and narrated how flowers promoted her from being a mere house wife, that only depended on her husband’s pocket change, to becoming a chief executive officer of her own business firm.
“I am almost there! I have managed to make huge investments through my flower business and am able to take myself to school, pay my own rentals, and fend for my son,” she shares.
“Flowers have helped me to rise from being a mere house wife to being my own boss and this is why I would encourage every woman to use their talent as a weapon to better their lives, despite being housewives of supportive husbands.”
Cecilia notes that with the change in times, most people are starting to realise the importance of fresh natural flowers during events, unlike artificial ones.
“I make most sales during special events like Valentine’s, especially on the very day with most orders coming from romantic men. Women are not too romantic; they are usually on the receiving end,” Cecilia says.
She said just as romantic men like Brian Chanda prefers not to surprise their women with the usual valentine gifts of Teddy bears worth K20, cups and a small dairy milk Chocolate like most UNZA students do, most men understand that women love money and prefer to hold them at their weakest by adding K100 notes in their bouquets, which is becoming common.
She said there has been a shortage of red roses since last week, which has resulted into suppliers increasing the prices due to high demand.
Like any other day, in the economic-stressed Zambia, Cecilia says sometimes, her business is slow and she only gets to sell a bouquet, but on special events like yesterday, she can make sells of roughly K20, 000.
“Aside Valentine’s, people make a lot of orders for funerals, birthdays, engagements, baby showers, graduations, weddings and sometimes on lucky days, even if there is no special event, people still make orders,” she says.
Cecilia’s flowers sell from as low as K15 per rose, up to K500 and more, depending on customers’ preference and from the business, she has been able to create employment for three people who tend to her business and ensure its smooth running whilst she focuses on her studies and be present in the life of her nine year old son.
Cecilia, who is a self-sponsored student of nursing, and is in her second year, said apart from selling flowers, she bakes cakes and is into decor and has nurtured her God-given talent for a decade now.
Cecilia, who is currently running her business from Business Society Park in Lusaka’s central business district, says her dream is to one day own a farm of roses and be the biggest flower supplier of flowers in Zambia.
“I have never disappointed my customers in my 10 years of the flower business and I ensure I tire myself running up and down to find their desired bouquet or hamper because I prioritise their needs,” said Cecilia.
Yesterday, the Internet was flooded with pictures of couples expressing love by gifting flowers, chocolates, among other gift hampers.
Some men gathered courage to pop the question to their better half of ‘will you marry me?’ while others filled up lodges around the country to do ‘bad manners’.
