The introduction of a two-dose-per-year antiretroviral drug marks a significant step forward in the fight against HIV, delivering a much needed lifeline to those living with the virus by simplifying the regimen and potentially improving adherence rates, ushering in a new era of more effective and patient centric HIV treatment.

ZNBC reports that the injectable antiretroviral drug could be available to patients as early as January 2026, according to Ministry of Health.

Ministry of Health HIV Prevention Lead Chimuka Phiri revealed that the initial distribution will be directed towards patients currently burdened by a multiple-tablet daily regimen.

Phiri explained that this initiative is part of government’s commitment to adopting cutting-edge technologies and expanding treatment options for patients, particularly those who struggle with adherence to daily tablet regimens.

“Many people struggle with daily medication, and injectable options provide privacy and discretion, helping individuals protect themselves without stigma,” he stated.

“We have already introduced Cabotegravir, an injectable PrEP administered every two months, as part of our commitment to expanding access to effective prevention tools,” he added.

This introduction of this new HIV treatment represents the next step in government to provide our patients with more accessible and convenient prevention and treatment options, ultimately leading to better health outcomes and a more effective response to the HIV epidemic.
