TWO patients who were reported to be in critical condition at Mansa General Hospital are now receiving specialist treatment at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) in Lusaka after their conditions took a dangerous turn over the weekend.
According to Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) the first patient, a young male who had been receiving treatment for injuries sustained in a road traffic accident, began experiencing sudden convulsions and severe headaches, forcing doctors to call for urgent evacuation.
In a separate case from the same facility, another patient with long-standing health complications was also placed on high alert after their condition worsened, with local doctors concluding that the hospital did not have the capacity to provide the level of care required.
With both lives hanging in the balance, hospital authorities contacted the Ministry of Health for assistance.
Government quickly authorised an emergency medical evacuation through the Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS).
The ZFDS dispatched a medical aircraft from Ndola, which landed in Mansa at around 11:00 hours.
The two patients were carefully loaded onto the aircraft and flown to Lusaka, where they arrived shortly after 13:00 hours.
Upon arrival at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport, an ambulance from UTH was already on standby and immediately transported the patients to the hospital for emergency admission.
“A UTH ambulance was on standby to transport the patients directly to the hospital, where they are currently admitted and receiving care,” ZFDS stated.
“We wish the patients a quick and speedy recovery”
