THE ongoing construction of the Lusaka-Ndola Dual Carriageway has not only brought hope for safer and faster travel but has created employment to over 3,500 people.
This milestone has surpassed the initial employment target of 3000 workers only.
The project, which is currently 36 percent complete, is being implemented under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model between the Government of Zambia and the Macro Ocean Investment Consortium (MOIC-LN) Limited, with the total investment standing at US$649 million.
Speaking during a media tour yesterday morning, Road Development Agency (RDA) Chief Communications and Corporate Affairs Manager Anthony Mulowa described the project as a success story in job creation.
“When you talk of job creation, this project has done very well as regards to job creation. Our target was to employ at least 3000 people during construction phase,,” said Mulowa.
“But, I’m happy to report that we have surpassed that statistic and we are standing at 3,510 people employed directly on this project.Talk of engineers, general workers, machine operators, people in administration and other related jobs.”
The dual carriageway, once completed, will stretch over 327 kilometers and aims to drastically reduce accidents and travel time between Lusaka and Ndola
The PPP model allows the private partner to construct and maintain the road, over a 25 year concession period, with three years for construction and 22 years for operations and maintenance.
According to project financing details, US$577 million was allocated for construction, with an additional US$69 million set aside for interest during the construction period.
The Lusaka-Ndola Dual Carriageway is expected to be completed in 2027.
