Muleabai, who has been in the dock over allegations of pocketing cash in exchange for cancelling property rate bills, was yesterday found with a case to answer and has been placed on defence..

The State alleges that between August 1 and September 30, 2023, Muleabai solicited K120,000 from businessman, Mark Gabites and later obtained K180,000 in cash gratification.

The alleged deal was said to have been an inducement to facilitate a 100 percent remission of property rates owed to the Livingstone City Council by Zamnuka Farming Limited.

When the matter came up for ruling on case to answer, senior Resident Magistrate Trevor Kasanda, sitting at the Livingstone Magistrates’ Court, ruled that the State had presented credible, reliable and sufficient evidence to warrant a defence.

Muleabai, however, has denied all the charges.

In her testimony, she admitted that she shared a family friendship with one of the prosecution witnesses, Monde Sumbwa, but rejected claims that she ever conspired with her to obtain money from Zamnuka Farms.

Despite the denials, the gavel of justice continues to hover over the Livingstone civic leader, with the court now setting November 28 as the day when the long-running case will finally see its verdict.

For now, Muleabai remains on the defence bench waiting to either walk free or face the wrath of the law.
